Charley and Edna Stafford nee Crabtree
Charley Clayton6 Stafford (William1, Robert2, Andrew3, Daniel4 Clayton5) Born 26 November 1906 in Glen Elder, Mitchell County, Kansas;1 died 13 September 1983 in Englewood, Arapahoe County, Colorado;2 buried at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Littleton, Arapahoe County, Colorado;3 married Edna Lucille Crabtree 11 August 1931, Wray, Yuma, County, Colorado.4
Charley spent most of his youth in Kansas, but the family did not stay in Glen Elder. In 1910, Charley's father was still in the Lansing Penitentiary5 and his mother and sisters lived with Thomas N. Higgins in Linn County, Kansas.6 Clayton Stafford was released from Lansing later that year and apparently, Grace and the children returned to Glen Elder, Kansas with Clayton Stafford where they continued to live until Grace Stafford died in 1915.7 The family tradition concerning the years after Grace's death is that the children were sent by train to live with different relatives, but there is no documentation to confirming this.
The 1920 census reports that Charley lived with the Orville McCoy family in Glen Elder and was listed as their foster son. McCoy's relationship to the Stafford family is unknown.8 How or why Charley Stafford went to Colorado is not known. It is possible that he went there because his paternal aunt, Sophie Gleason, lived in Yuma County, Colorado. She and her family were there from 19209 to the end of their lives.10
It is in Yuma County that Charley met Miss Edna Lucile Crabtree, daughter of Harry "Elmer" and Edna Crabtree nee Wright.3,11 They married there on 11 August 19314 and lived there only a short time when they moved to Denver, Colorado so Charley could find work. It was in Denver, Colorado that their only child, Dolores Eileen Stafford, was born on 22 December 1935.12,13
Charley and Edna settled in Englewood, Arapahoe County, Colorado where they would live all of their lives.13 Charley worked for Cary's New and Used Furniture in Denver and Edna worked for Samsonite Luggage also in Denver.13
Charley Stafford died on 13 September 1983 at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood2,3 and was buried at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Littleton, Arapahoe County, Colorado.13 Edna continued to live in their home until a year or two prior to her death. She died 17 February 2002 in Englewood, Arapahoe County, Colorado.12 She was buried beside Charley in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Littleton, Colorado.12
