Sophie M. Stafford and George Harvey Gleason

195.  Sophie M. Stafford5 (William1 Robert2 Andrew3 Daniel4) was Clayton's youngest child. She was born February 1880 in Iowa, probably in Warren County.1  No more information is known about her childhood than is known for her brother, Clayton and older sister, Cora.  In fact, nothing at all is known about Cora other than she is listed in the Stafford household in 1880.Her father did not own property in Carlisle and was listed on the census as a day laborer.  It is unlikely that they had many things while she was young.  Sophie was only six years old when her father left for Decatur County, Kansas to obtain a homestead.  There was a six year old girl who attended school at the same time Clayton went to the Star School in Decatur County.  Her name was listed as Minnie Stafford.  It is not known for sure if this is Sophie or if there was another girl that age also with the Stafford surname, who lived in the same part of Decatur County.2   This girl did not attend this school after the term ending in July 1889.  If this is Sophia M. Stafford, she most likely went to live with her mother, Ella / Ellen Shepard, who had married a man named Millard F. Sheppard and lived in Albia, Monroe County, Iowa.3  The Hebron Journal newspaper notices describing her visit to her brother Clayton Stafford indicate that she still lived in Albia in 1900. 4

Shortly after the visit visit Sophie made to Hubbell, Nebraska, she married George Harvey Gleason, who lived with his family in the adjacent county across the Kansas-Nebraska state line. They were married on 01 May 1900 in Republic County, Kansas by a minister named Daniel Smith. The way George and Sophia met is not known. In June 1900 when the census was enumerated they are found living with George's parents.6  George and Sophia Gleason lived in Kansas for the next 14-15 years.7

When the 1910 census was enumerated they were living in Marshall County, Kansas where George was listed as a farmer, who rented his ground.8  By 1918, George and Sophie Gleason were living in Yuma County, Colorado when George registered for the Draft of World War I.9  They lived there the rest of their lives.7

They were the parents of 8 children listed below.  Sophia died on 23 February 1962 and is buried at the Eckley Cemetery in Yuma County, Colorado.10,11 She was buried next to George, who died shortly before.11,12
