Harriet Stafford and Levi Farnsworth

Harriet4 Stafford  (William1, Robert2, Starling3) Born before 1840, probably in Morgan County, Indiana;1,2,3 death information for Harriet Stafford is not known at this time.  At the time of this writing, only limited research is completed for Harriet Stafford.  Records filed in Morgan and Johnson County, Indiana document that Starling Stafford was her father and presumably, Sarah Stafford nee Elliott, his wife was Harriet's mother. [These documents and further discussion are available on the page for Starling Stafford.]

The probate court record appointing a guardian for the minor heirs of Starling Stafford, deceased, is the earliest record found to date documenting, listing Harriet by name.1  The 1850 census record for Harriet's mother, Sarah Stafford Holland nee Elliott seems to have several error, confounding the evidence for this family.  The combined evidence for Sarah and her children seem to support that Sarah Holland of Des Moines County, Iowa is the same person as Sarah Stafford nee Elliott.  Assuming that this conclusion is correct, Harriet must have moved with her mother and her relatives from Indiana shortly after her father's death in 1838.  It is probably safe to conclude that she was a young child, but her exact age when they left Indiana and headed west has not been documented.  Harriet is enumerated in her mother's household in 1850,3 however, there appears to be a discrepancy in her age.  In 1850 she is listed as 6 years of age,3 but in 1860 she is listed as 28 years of age.

In the 1870,7 18809 and 190010 census records, Harriet Farnsworth's age is reported as expected.  Evidence is needed to support the conclusion that Harriet Stafford, who is the daughter of Starling and Sarah Stafford nee Elliott is the same person as the Harriet Stafford, who married a doctor named, Levi Farnsworth of Lee County.  Lee County adjacent to Des Moines County.  Another researcher interested in this Stafford line, Richard Clark,4 has conducted quite a lot of research for Harriet Stafford's branch of the family.  Copies of the actual documents are needed to substantiate claims of his research.

The 1860 census enumeration for Levi and Harriet Farnsworth indicates that Levi Farnsworth was a doctor in Augusta, Iowa.6  He was was 28 years older than Harriet and had grown children probably from a prior marriage who lived with him as well as his new bride, Harriet and her presumed son, Horace W. Stafford.  Both Levi and Harriet had son's named Horace.  The fact that Horace W. Stafford lives in the household with Levi and Harriet Farnsworth does not prove that Harriet was a Stafford by birth and also that she was his mother.  More work is needed to support these assumptions.

Note:  The 1850 census record for Harriet Stafford as 6 years old, however, she is named as an infant heir to Starling Stafford's estate.  Since his death occurred in 1838 and she was born prior to his death or within 1 year of his death she was probably at least 11 years old.  Documents generally list the order of Starling's heirs as Caroline, Harriet and Perry which may indicate she is probably older than Perry.  It is possible that Harriet was 16 rather than 6 in 1850.  Work is needed to further document her age.
