~~~~~Third Generation~~~~~
Allen Stafford and wives, Charity Freeman and Margaret Gifford
15. Allen Stafford3 (William1   Robert2) Born about 1808 in Ohio1,2 probably in Highland County to Robert and Sarah Stafford nee Bullock;3 died [the date and place of his death has not been documented.]  The exact time that Allen and his parents left Ohio and went to Indiana is not known.  [See Robert Stafford's webpage.] Since Allen would have been only 12 years old in 1820, when Robert Stafford was enumerated in Indiana, he probably moved there when his father did.  On 07 February 1833, Allen Stafford married Charity Freeman in Johnson County, Indiana.4  She was born on 19 August 1817 to William and Mary Freeman.4,5
Although a land patent was also granted to him for a parcel of land in Morgan County, Indiana6 [see map], the 1840 census documented that Allen Stafford lived in Johnson County, Indiana on 1 June 1840,2  and in 1850 Allen and Charity were enumerated there again.1  By 1860, Allen Stafford, was enumerated by himself in Johnson County.7 Charity Stafford nee Freeman died on 06 October 1851 and was buried in the Freeman Cemetery, where her father-in- law, Robert Stafford was buried.8  Other members of her family were also buried in this cemetery.  A picture of her tombstone is available below.
In 1840 the census taker recorded Allen's household with three children.  There were two boys under 10 years of age and 1 girl less than 5 years of age.2  By 1850 only two children, William and Sarah lived with them.1  It is quite possible that Allen helped to care for his father's young children, who were left orphaned when Robert Stafford died in 1833.  [See Robert Stafford's webpage.]  After Charity Stafford died in 1851, Allen Stafford married Margaret Gifford in Johnson County, Indiana on 01 March 1852.9
No tombstone was found for either Allen Stafford or his second wife, Margaret.  At this time, their date and place of death is not known.  Since the deed signed by Allen Stafford when he sold land to Henry Swanger in 1859 was signed only by Allen and no dower statement was included10 and the 1860 census confirms that he lived alone, it is quite possible that Margaret was deceased or divorced him before 25 March 1859.10
Future Research:
  • Look for records documenting the death of Allen Stafford.
  • Look for records documenting death of Margaret Stafford nee Gifford.
  • Determine if Allen's daughter, Sarah, married and follow her line forward.
* Note:  The two unnamed children may have been Allen's half brother and sister, Robert and Lydia Stafford.  These two children had legal guardians appointed when their father, Robert Stafford, Sr.  died.  Court records indicate that the guardianship for them changed and it can be inferred that their older siblings shared in the care of these younger children.
