Lydia Stafford and William M. Everling

22.  Lydia Stafford, Jr. 3 (William1   Robert2) b. about 1832 in Indiana;d. [?].  She married William Everling on or about 17 November 1850.2  [There is additional discussion below about the date of their marriage.] Lydia was enumerated in Isaac Marshall's household in 1850 and was listed as 18 years of age.1 She apparently helped this 58-year-old man care for his children.  No woman near his age was enumerated in this household, which consisted of 4 children ranging in age from 4 to 18 plus the 18-year-old, Lydia Stafford.  It is important to note that only two households below on this census page is William Freeman's household which lists her future husband, William Everling .  William was 10 years older than Lydia; both told the census taker they were born in Indiana.1  Lydia Stafford and William Everling married in Johnson County, Indiana.  The date is uncertain, but probably was 17 November 1850. Their marriage record has several discrepancies in the actual record.  It states that their license was issued on 26 November 1850, but the minister that married them did not return the marriage record to be filed until 17 February 1851.  He states that he married William and Lydia Everling on 17th day of November 1850 and he signed the record 2nd day of December 1850 or 51[?].2  Lydia is the daughter of Robert Stafford and her mother is most likely Robert's 2nd wife, Isabel [surname unknown]. [See this discussion under her brother, Grant's, webpage.]

William and Lydia Everling nee Stafford remained in the state of Indiana for most of their married life if not all.  They were enumerated in Johnson County in 1860,3 but by 1870 they were living in Indianapolis. 4 They did not stay there permanently, but moved back to the area where Lydia's brothers lived in Morgan County.  The 1880 census documents their return to Morgan County.5  No listing has been located for either Lydia or William in 1900.

Lydia and William were the parents of at least three children, who were born between 18533 and 1867.No other information is known about Lydia and William Everling.

Further research:

  • Need death records for both Lydia and William Everling.

  • Need to determine if their children married.  Did Albert Everling also use the name William?

  • Who is William Everling, who married a woman with the given name Emma.

Note:  I have not researched Lydia's line at all other than to look for them in the census and to obtain a copy of her marriage record.  I would like to learn more about Lydia and William and if you are researching this line please do contact me as I may have information that will help you with your research if you are tracing her paternal line.  Information is needed about when and where they died as well as what happened to their children.
